MODERN CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION WITH STRAWBALES.

Advanced workshop Self Building Straw Bale Building Technologies with Passive House Standard

Where will the workshop take place?
The workshop will take place at the Centre for Appropriate Technology in Böheimkirchen (Lower Austria, 40km east from Vienna) where the team of the Center for Appropriate Technology (www.grat.at) has developed and put into practice the S-HOUSE – an internationally awarded “Factor 10” demonstration building with a straw bale construction (www.s-house.at). Map: www.s-house.at/BSplan.htm

When will the workshop take place?
The advanced workshop will start on Monday, April 23rd and will end on Friday, April 27th.

To whom it is addressed?
The target group for this workshop are especially self builders. Furthermore architects, craftsmen and constructors are also addressed.

What will be demonstrated?
In the workshop straw bale building techniques will be demonstrated by means of renovating an old barn right beside the S-HOUSE. The aim is to (re)use the existing construction (wooden post and beam construction as well as wooden facade) and to add straw bale insulation without changing the original shape and structure of the barn. Roof and wall constructions will be built. The participants will learn about the quality criteria of straw bales and how to examine them. They will be shown how to design and plan foundations, wall and roof constructions and junctions between foundations and walls as well as walls and the roof. Working with different types of bales will also be demonstrated and more...

What are the benefits for the participants?
The participants will gain knowledge about straw bale building, self building technologies with straw bales and passive house technology. They will be introduced into the basics of straw bale building. Planning skills as well as practical skills can be obtained. Furthermore they will learn working in a team.

Who will guide the workshops?
The workshops are guided by Robert Wimmer and Hannes Hohensinner (GrAT research institute).

S-HOUSE
